Tuesday, October 8:  Teacher workday

We are very excited about our Water Project fundraiser! Please read over the information sent home on Friday and begin helping your child raise money. Our goal is $500 which puts every child at about $23 dollars J Thank you so much for your support in helping us raise money for this wonderful cause!

Reading:

We are finishing our current extended text, A Long Walk to Water by answering questions for the study guide.  The test will be the week we return from the staff furlough / student holiday.  After the test we will start our new extended text, The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate.

“Ivan is an easygoing gorilla. Living at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade, he has grown accustomed to humans watching him through the glass walls of his domain. He rarely misses his life in the jungle. In fact, he hardly ever thinks about it at all.

Instead, Ivan thinks about TV shows he’s seen and about his friends Stella, an elderly elephant, and Bob, a stray dog. But mostly Ivan thinks about art and how to capture the taste of a mango or the sound of leaves with color and a well-placed line.

Then he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from her family, and she makes Ivan see their home—and his own art—through new eyes. When Ruby arrives, change comes with her, and it’s up to Ivan to make it a change for the better.

Katherine Applegate blends humor and poignancy to create Ivan’s unforgettable first-person narration in a story of friendship, art, and hope.”

During Reading Workshop we continued learning how to determine what the text says explicitly and what inferences we can make. We are also applying our knowledge of the first two sign posts, contrast & contradictions and aha moments.

In guided reading we are continuing to learn and apply main idea.

Writing:

The students finished their special person essays on Friday.  This week, we will be working on creating scenes within our writing.  We will read the mentor text, Firefiles by Julie Brinkloe to look at the motivations and struggles of a little boy.

Math:

In math last week we began our unit on multiplication. We learned about solving for an unknown variable and creating equations and word stories independently. Students also learned different strategies to use to solve multiplication equations.  This week we will be reviewing multiplication strategies.  These include groups of, number line, arrays and charts, inverse operations, and repeated addition. We will also begin using strategies to solve two digit by one digit equations next week!

***It will be very hard for your child to do well this unit, and in the future, if his or her math facts are not mastered.  Please make sure you are reviewing multiplication facts at home.  Thank you so much for your help.

Science:

We are finishing up the weather unit this week. After the break we will begin the map skills unit.  Please be on look out for the study guide.

As always thank you for all of your support and remember my door is always open.
