Our week:

Reading – This week we will begin our new extended text, The One and Only Ivan. We are focusing on the characters from the book as well as the character traits, based on the actions, words, and thoughts of the characters. We also read other books to help us practice focusing on character traits and completing character sketches.   In guided reading we are working on the skill of main idea.

Writing – I am so proud of the progress we are making with our narrative writing!  The students will be working on writing scenes.  We will learn about the story arc to help us organize our information.  The story arc will also help us focus on including a developing a hook, transitions, and all the important parts of a good narrative, which are an introduction that describes the character and sets the scene, a problem, motivations and struggles that develop the story, a climax, and a resolution to the problem that wraps up the story.

Grammar – We are taking a break with spelling words until the next full week after our break. Students will bring home new spelling words on October 14th.

S.S. – We will spend this week learning about map skills and our map skills project.  The study guide for the map skills test will come home on Wednesday.   Please use the study guide to help with studying at home.

Math – We are wrapping up multiplicative comparisons and moving on to multiplying up to 4 digits by 1 digit. We will use model drawing (we call window pane) and the distributive property to teach multiplication. Please refer to the resources on the blog to help at home.

Please contact me with any questions or concerns.
