Test and Project Dates:
Friday, October 25—The students will take a quiz on area and perimeter. We will also have our weekly spelling test.
Schoolwide Important Dates:

Monday, October 21 – Friday, October 25: Conference Week (early dismissal at 12:15)
11/7 Kroger Math Night
11/22 School Spirit Day
11/25 – 11/29 Thanksgiving Break

Oh the Places We Will Go in Our Learning…

Math: We will review the concept of Area and Perimeter. Students developed understanding of area and perimeter in 3rd grade by using visual models. While students are expected to use formulas to calculate area and perimeter of rectangles, they need to understand and be able to communicate their understanding of why the formulas work. The formula for area is l x w and the answer will always be in square units. The formula for perimeter can be 2 l + 2 w or 2 (l + w) and the answer will be in linear units. This standard calls for students to generalize their understanding of area and perimeter by connecting the concepts to mathematical formulas. These formulas should be developed through experience not just memorization.
Mr. Rutherford is covering the miniature golf course with an artificial grass. How many 1-foot squares of carpet will he need to cover the entire course?

Reading: We are continuing to read, The One and Only Ivan. We will explore the literary elements of character, setting, and theme. In guided reading, the students are practicing finding the main idea.

Language Arts: We will continue our unit on verbs. The students will create “scenes” in their narrative writing. We will be learning about the story arc and how to add action to our writing. The students will work on editing and revising their narratives. We are hoping to finish the writing piece on Friday.

Social Studies: We are continuing our map skills unit. The students learned about the different parts of a map: title, legend / key, Compass Rose, and Longitude & Latitude. They will be applying their knowledge by creating maps with their team mates. I am excited to see all of my budding cartographers!

Thank you for your continued support. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.
