November 21 Update

Posted on: November 30, 2014

Dear Parents,

I hope each of you were able to enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving!  We were able to spend time with my family and Mr. Winsett’s family.  My dad’s heart surgery went really well.  He is back home and resting after only a few days.  Thank you for all of your thoughts and prayers!  I have SO many reasons to be thankful!  Most importantly, I get to work with the most amazing students each day!!!  I am incredibly blessed to work with each one of your children.  It has been a fantastic school year already!  I am able to see each student’s talents and strengths on a daily basis!

I am in the process of planning our winter party.  The students have decided on a “Christmas morning” theme.  I will be sending home a sign up sheet this Friday.  I would love to make pancakes during the party.  If you have an electric griddle, please contact me.  I can’t wait to see each of you at our extravaganza!

We are diving deep into the Fourth Grade Curriculum!

Content Essential Question:

How do I describe the reasons for, obstacles to, and accomplishments of the Spanish, French, and English explorations of John Cabot, Vasco Núñez de Balboa, Juan Ponce de León, Christopher Columbus, Henry Hudson, and Jacques Cartier? How do I describe examples of cooperation and conflict between Europeans and Native Americans?

What are the six simple machines?

We are finishing up our unit on the six simple machines: level, screw, fulcrum, pulley, incline plane, and wheel & axle.  The students were given a study guide before the Thanksgiving break.  We will go over the answers on Monday and play a review game.  The test will be this Wednesday.  The students were also to create a famous explorer using a styrofoam ball and a bottle.  This project is due this Thursday.

STEM Essential Question: How can we use what we know about materials and their properties, our creativity, and the Engineering Design Process to design windmill blades that will catch the wind?

The students will use the engineering design process to create a marshmallow catapult. The students will learn about the six simple machines throughout engineering design process. We will test the catapults to see which one can propel the giant marshmallow the farthest distance. The students will be given time to improve their design and retest their catapult.

Reading Essential Question: How do I describe the theme in a story or drama, drawing on specific details from the text?

This week, the students will continue to learn the similarities and differences with poetry, prose, and drama.  Each of the types of texts have specific components.  The students will be able to identify if a text is poetry, prose, or drama.  Our current read aloud is The One and Only Ivan. You are welcome, but not required, to purchase this text for your child to read along in class.

Language Arts Essential Question: How do I write an expository essay to share information?

Wait!  Don’t shoot the turkey!!!  Your child may have come and discussed why you shouldn’t eat turkey for Thanksgiving.  We are writing opinion essays on why we should find another alternative for the main course of Thanksgiving dinner.  I can’t wait for you to read your child’s essay!  In grammar, we will be discussing subjects and predicates.

Math Essential Question: How do I divide a multi-digit dividend by a one digit divisor?

Please work with your child to help them become fluent with their multiplication facts. A strong knowledge of multiplication will give your child a firm foundation for division.  Before the break, the students learned the partial quotients strategy.  This week, the students will be learning place value long division, and traditional long division.  They are not required to know all of the strategies, however, they will need to be proficient at one of the strategies.

Volunteer Opportunities:

I look forward to working with your family and like family, the door is always open to come and help. If you are able to help out in the classroom via volunteering in the class, help with materials (cutting out materials, gathering, assembling etc), room parent, or any other means of helping out in or out of the classroom please let me know.

It is my pleasure to serve your child, if you have any questions, please contact me at ashley.winsett@cobbk12.org
